Christmas ‘Round the Corner

Who doesn’t love the holiday season, especially in Fairhope? With all it’s soft twinkle lights, delicious foods, nice weather, and ornate ornaments, Christmas is one of my most favorite times of year.

The thing is, though, that Christmas is just once a year.  And while Fairhope does it up special , there are times when I miss the magic and beauty of the season. Sometimes a little Christmas cheer is exactly what one needs to get through a rough patch or even an endlessly sunny summer. No matter what the reason, the prospect of Christmas always makes me more cheerful.

Which is why I was delighted, like a child on that long awaited morning, to find a holiday store in the heart of downtown Fairhope!

Called Christmas ‘Round the Corner, this little gem was one of the first places that helped me to know I was in the right location to start my future. It may sound strange, but collecting Christmas ornaments is a bit of a family pastime.  Being a Christmas baby, the collection started before I can even remember and it has grown substantially in the thirty years since.  My mother, grandmother, and aunt also have a love for the unique ornament, each of us seeming to have our “own designer” who we love to collect.

For my mother it was Polish designer Christopher Radko. For me, I have a soft spot for “Olde World Ornaments,” as they have a large selection of sea life ornaments. My grandmother preferred Victorian style ornaments, while my aunt collects patriotic ornaments, in honor of our families ties to the armed forces.

Whatever it is that you love to display for the holidays though, Christmas ‘Round the Corner probably has it.

Walking into the shop is like stepping into Narnia; the smell of pine permeates the space as decorated trees glitter with delicate reminders of hobbies, vacations, interests, and special occasions. Have you and that special someone tied the knot this year?  There is an ornament to commemorate your first Christmas together.  Got yourselves a new addition to the family?  There are options for that, too. Do you celebrate one of the other lovely holidays that coincide with the timing of Christmas?  Fear not!  There are ornaments to celebrate those as well!
